Description
This striking landscape by Stig Jonzon reflects the artist’s enduring engagement with the light and rural architecture of Öland. Centered on a traditional post mill rising against a vast Scandinavian sky, Jonzon’s broken brushwork and shimmering treatment of light suggest an awareness of the optical principles associated with Georges Seurat and the broader legacy of Pointillism, though interpreted here through a freer and more expressive Nordic sensibility.
Rather than adopting strict divisionism, Jonzon uses small touches of contrasting colour to animate the landscape, allowing the pale earth, blue sky, and sunlit architecture to vibrate with atmosphere. His years in Paris during the late 1940s likely deepened this sensitivity to European modernist approaches to light and surface.
Biography
Stig Jonzon (Karl Stig Börje Jonsson, 1913–1987) was a Swedish painter and printmaker closely associated with the landscapes and coastal environments of Öland and southeastern Sweden. Born in Köping on the island of Öland, Jonzon remained deeply connected to the region throughout his life, maintaining a studio in Resmo where the island’s expansive skies, windmills, shorelines, and weathered buildings became recurring subjects in his work.
He studied in Kalmar under the painter Ivan Hoflund between 1931 and 1932, receiving a traditional artistic foundation before broadening his perspective through extensive travel. Between 1947 and 1950, Jonzon spent significant periods in Paris, where he absorbed elements of postwar European painting and developed a heightened sensitivity to light and spatial atmosphere. His growing reputation was affirmed in 1951 when he received a Mention Honorable at the Paris Salon and exhibited with Groupe Contraste at the Palais Municipal.
His works are represented in the collections of Kalmar konstmuseum, Kalmar läns museum, and the Swedish Royal collections.
