Biography

Eduard Theodor Ritter von Grützner (1846 - 1925) was one of the leading genre painters of the Munich School and among the most successful German artists of the late nineteenth century. Born in Groß-Karlowitz in Upper Silesia (now Poland), he was the youngest child of a modest farming family. His artistic talent was recognised early by the local parish priest, who helped secure his education and later arranged for him to study in Munich. There, Grützner trained under Hermann Dyck, Hermann Anschütz, and ultimately the celebrated history painter Carl Theodor von Piloty at the Munich Academy.

Although trained within the rigorous academic tradition of the Munich School, Grützner soon turned from grand historical subjects to genre painting. His breakthrough came with scenes of monastic life, a theme that would define his career. Monks reading, drinking, dining, and making music became his specialihty, rendered with meticulous technique, rich colour, and a warm, often humorous sensibility. These works earned him widespread popularity and the nickname “Mönchmaler” (“Monk Painter”).

His success brought considerable recognition. He was awarded the title of Professor in 1886 and was later elevated to the Bavarian nobility, becoming Eduard Ritter von Grützner in 1916. During his lifetime he enjoyed international popularity, and his works entered museum and private collections throughout Europe and America.

The present work bears both Grützner’s name and that of “M. Winker.” While further research would be required to establish provenance with certainty, the painting appears to derive from Grützner’s celebrated Falstaff compositions and may represent a studio work, pupil’s copy, or later interpretation after the artist’s designs.
