Description

Biography

Göran Brunius (1911–2005) was a Swedish painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and author. He was the son of noted art critic and writer August Brunius and began his formal studies at Otte Sköld’s painting school in Stockholm, continuing on at Bror Hjorth’s and Nils Möllerberg’s sculpture school between 1930 and 1931. He later attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1932 to 1937, while also studying abroad at Maison Watteau in Paris and at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, giving his artistic formation an international dimension.

As a painter, Brunius worked largely en plein air. Whilst his graphic works were characterised by precise realism, particularly in his etchings, his paintings often moved toward impressionistic and occasionally expressionistic interpretations of landscape and atmosphere. His subjects ranged from Swedish coastlines, Stockholm views, and Lappland scenery to depictions of birds and figures inspired by his travels among Berber and Mayan cultures.

Birdlife became one of the defining themes of his career. Brunius combined the eye of a naturalist with the discipline of a graphic artist, producing highly detailed studies of Scandinavian bird species. This passion also extended into his writing through publications such as Se på fåglar (1955) and Svenskt fågellexikon (1962), both celebrated for their observational clarity and artistic refinement.

Throughout his career, Brunius exhibited internationally and gained representation in major collections including the Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet, Gävle Museum, Kalmar Konstmuseum, and Institut Tessin in Paris. He was also a member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence.
