Description
"La Chichi a través de la pantalla" is part of Sofia's series "Porque ahora están lejos" ("because now they are far away"), which began while she was living alone after coming back to Spain from a visit to Uruguay, when her everyday contact with her family shifted to a phone screen.
Sofia has always preferred painting from life, but the distance, and her need to portray her loved ones, led her to find another way to do it that felt authentic to herself. Sofia began recording video calls with her family, which allowed her to return to the spontaneous expressions that emerged during conversation: a laugh, a glance or a gesture mid-story.
From such recordings, Sofia selected images that became the starting point for her paintings, with "La Chichi a través de la pantalla" being an excellent example. It depicts Sofia's grandmother, Selva, whom she calls "la Chichi". The painting keeps what a screen tends to lose, which is the character of her grandmother and the closeness between them.
La Chichi is a woman full of life, joy and a positive outlook who brighten the lives of everyone around her. The painting impeccably conveys her vitality and warmth - which continue to reach Sofia, even through a screen and from so far away.
Biography
Sofía Centurión (Montevideo, Uruguay, 2004) is a visual artist based in Barcelona. She began her artistic training in Uruguay, studying at Rogelio Osorio's studio and undertaking studies in sculpture at the "Escuela de Artes y Artesanías Dr. Pedro Figari" while attending the Faculty of Arts at the "Universidad de la República". After that, she moved to Spain and completed the Full Programme in Drawing and Painting at the prestigious Barcelona Academy of Art after she received a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation.
Her practice focuses on figurative painting and drawing, rooted in direct observation, personal experience and memory. Through portraits, still lifes and scenes from her surroundings, she explores emotional connections and the stories held by people, objects and everyday spaces.
Sofia's work has been exhibited in Uruguay, Spain and the United Kingdom.
My work begins with people, objects, and situations that form part of my life. This is where I find what interests me most: a gesture that belongs only to one person, an object that still holds the presence of whoever used it, or a space transformed by those who inhabit it.
When I portray someone, I am interested in approaching what makes that person who they are. I do not understand this as something fixed or easily defined. It appears in their character, in certain gestures, and in the way they change, almost like a chameleon. I prefer to work from life because a person never remains the same, and the portrait develops over the time we share. For me, what happens during that encounter is an essential part of the work. The painting ultimately brings together different moments rather than responding to a single image.
In my still lifes, I begin from a different place. Objects allow me to work through memory and to preserve something of the people and places to which they are connected. Each has a specific history, and its position within the composition responds to relationships that exist for me before I begin painting. The viewer may not know the full context, but every object is there for a particular reason. I am also interested in allowing the painting to retain the traces of its process. Resolved passages coexist with areas that have been scraped back, left open, or only suggested. Light structures and connects the people, objects, and space, while the materiality of the paint supports the image and, at times, creates tension within it.
My work exists between direct encounter and memory. I am interested in looking at the everyday without idealising it or turning it into something else, while recognising the intensity it already contains.
