Description
This atmospheric view of Malmö Harbour captures the quiet character of one of Sweden’s most important maritime centres. Moored vessels rest in calm water, their dark hulls and slender masts creating a strong linear structure against the soft outlines of the city beyond. Reflections ripple across the harbour surface, lending movement and depth to the composition while reinforcing its tranquil mood. Larsson employs a restrained palette of greys, blues and muted earth tones, subtly enlivened by touches of warmer colour in the surrounding architecture.
Biography
Carl Oscar Larsson (1887 - 1962) was a Swedish painter active during the first half of the twentieth century, known principally for landscapes, harbour scenes and views of Swedish towns. Although he remains less widely documented than his near-contemporary and namesake Carl Olof Larsson (1853 - 1919), his surviving works reveal an accomplished painter with a particular affinity for maritime subjects and urban environments.
Records and exhibition references indicate that Carl Oscar Larsson was active throughout the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, producing paintings that frequently depict coastal settlements, fishing harbours and city waterfronts. His work reflects a strong connection to southern Sweden, where ports such as Malmö provided a rich source of artistic inspiration.
Working during a period of significant social and economic change in Sweden, Larsson documented environments that were themselves evolving. His paintings now serve as valuable visual records of mid-twentieth-century Scandinavian life, particularly in coastal communities where maritime trade remained central to local identity.
