Description
Vårvinter, or "Spring Winter", is a serene landscape by Inga Berg that captures the quiet transition between winter and spring, a theme that runs consistently throughout her work. Snow still blankets the ground in soft, irregular patches, while emerging ochres, muted greens, and warm browns begin to break through, suggesting thaw and renewal.
Berg’s brushwork is confident yet restrained, with simplified forms and a delicate balance between abstraction and representation. The trees are rendered in vertical, almost translucent strokes, contrasting with the broader, more solid planes of the land.
The air feels crisp in this painting and the pale light canvassing the spring winter invokes a contemplative, atmosphere mood, aided further by its presentation alongside a beautiful and softly carved, light-toned frame.
Biography
Inga Berg (1912–1995) was a Swedish painter whose life and work were closely bound to her hometown of Örebro, where she was born and remained throughout her life. Far from limiting her, Örebro provided a consistent source of inspiration, with her work reflecting her engagement with the local environment, while her recurring depictions of the countryside reveal a sustained attentiveness to seasonal change.
Berg’s work is distinguished by its sensitivity to the shifting rhythms of the Swedish year. This piece, Vårvinter or "Spring Winter" (1953) and others such as Mild vår (1970) and Sommardag (1980) demonstrate her enduring fascination with seasonal change. That she continued to produce and date works into her eighties attests to a lifelong dedication to painting.
Berg’s work is represented in regional collections, including the Örebro Läns Museum.
