Description
This lively street scene by Max Hellberg captures the atmosphere of a sunlit urban courtyard belonging to a dye factory. Hellberg conveys daily life here through movement, gesture and spatial relationships, his loose brushwork strikingly resembling a piece painted with Gouache (as opposed to oil).
Whitewashed walls dominate the scene, creating a luminous backdrop against which darker doorways, windows and figures emerge with clarity. Small touches of red, yellow and green animate the painting, drawing the eye across the surface and lending a sense of vitality to the almost oriental setting.
Biography
Max Hellberg (1907 - 1976) was a Swedish painter whose work encompassed landscapes, townscapes, still lifes and genre scenes. Born in Stockholm in 1907, he belonged to a generation of artists who developed their practice outside the major academies; contemporary Swedish sources describe him as largely self-taught, a background that allowed him to cultivate a direct and personal approach to painting.
Hellberg exhibited a broad range of subjects throughout his career. Records and surviving works reveal an artist equally at ease depicting Stockholm (and Oriental) streets, mountain landscapes, fishing harbours, floral still lifes and scenes inspired by travel.
Hellberg maintained a consistent artistic practice over several decades, and his works continue to appear regularly in Scandinavian.
