Description
A mature, atmospheric work by Helge Kemner. A cluster of red farm buildings sits low against the land, sheltered by a stand of tall, bare branched trees trapping the tidings of jubilant warm light along the horizon at dawn. A dirt track cuts diagonally through the foreground, its ruts picking up the same glow, leading the eye toward the huddled buildings and the low hills beyond. The muted, tonal palette of blue greys, ochres and rust lends the composition its quiet, elegiac mood.
Biography
Helge Kemner (1883 - 1934) was born in Malmö, Sweden on 3 August 1883. His brother, Nils Kemner, went on to become a noted entomologist, but Helge took an artistic path instead, training first in Copenhagen between 1906 and 1907 before spending time in Munich and Dachau. A longer period of study followed in Paris from 1910, and in 1921 he made a study trip to Italy.
Kemner's reputation rests chiefly on the landscapes he painted around Romeleåsen. It became something of a personal territory for him. His treatment of this countryside is consistently lyrical in tone, favouring soft, atmospheric light over documentary detail, and it is generally in these views that his work is considered to reach its fullest expression.
He is represented in several Swedish public collections, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, which holds his Skåne Landscape in Winter (1923), and the Malmö Museum, which holds Kvällssol (1917) among other works.
