Description
This powerful composition is a masterful exploration of rhythmic labor and tonal harmony. Centred on a group of nondescript workers (who are perhaps coal miners, fishermen or farm hands), the use of deep, resonant blues and purples compliments the sky’s warm, golden-orange palette.
The modernist technique, which emphasises movement and collective strength over individual detail, alongside the interplay between the bold, gestural brushstrokes and the structured geometry of the cart wheel gives the scene an almost cinematic quality. This piece is well-suited to both modern and traditional interiors.
Biography
Bertil Gunnar Wahlberg (1923 - 1980) was a Swedish painter associated with post-war modernism.
Trained under Isaac Grünewald in Stockholm from 1942 to 1945, he absorbed a Matisse-influenced colourism that shaped his later work. He came of age during Sweden’s vigorous post-war modernist expansion and soon travelled across France, Italy, Austria, Yugoslavia and Greece, using these journeys as direct subject matter for his paintings.
Early exhibitions in Karlskrona (1944), including work shown with Olle Ängkvist, introduced his Mediterranean and urban motifs to Swedish audiences. His 1950s figure compositions of children, couples and street scenes were praised for their atmospheric looseness and strong colouristic sensitivity. He also produced murals, published poetry, and developed a parallel practice as a commercial artist in later decades.
His works are held in permanent collections at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Trelleborgs Museum. His legacy was further documented by his son Thomas Wahlberg, who has written two biographical books relating to Bertil Gunnar Wahlberg's work.
